How did Society of Meow start?

Tired of buying generic cat products made from synthetic materials, Karla, Society of Meow’s founder, thought there must be better options. After tireless searching she couldn’t find any that fit the brief in New Zealand. So, in true kiwi fashion, Karla decided to do it herself and Society of Meow (SoM) was born.

She set out to make her own products and source better options that promoted the health and wellbeing of cats. And where better to start then fun and engaging, premium handmade toys. Fast forward to now and Society of Meow is only just getting started.

There are big plans ahead for Society of Meow. New products are constantly in the works. And we are always on the look-out for ways we can improve to better align with our mission. We are so so grateful to have you part of the community and support Society of Meow’s journey.

Meet the Team

Karla

(Founder, Maker, Product scout)

A self-confessed crazy cat lady and honestly this was never not going to be the case. She vividly remembers wishing she could have a pet lion when she was a little girl. Of course, this wasn’t exactly practical growing up in New Zealand suburbia. So, she gravitated towards the next best thing, house cats.

With Society of Meow, Karla has finally been able to take her love of cats and move it to the next level - helping cats everywhere. She now resides in Ōtepoti/Dunedin with her husband and two illegitimate children (cats), Tylo and Zaza.

Bringing years of knowledge to the table, Tylo knows his stuff. His particular expertise are beds and catnip. And of course, only the best will do! When he’s not consulting on new products, you can find him out in the garden. Around SoM HQ he’s affectionately known as Farmer Tylo.

Zaza

With her youthful spirit burning bright, Zaza takes great pride in stress testing new toys at SoM HQ. And she has a blast doing it! When she’s not throwing her toys around, Zaza enjoys sitting in the rain, tormenting her brother, and watching the neighbours. Her list of nicknames is endless but a fan favourite is Chonkle Berry.
